National Tamale Day is celebrated on March 23 every year. It is a day for celebrating all kinds of tamales, from the traditional Latin American dish to the XLNT tamales that were born in Southern California in 1894. If you're a tamale lover, you won't want to miss celebrating this day.

History of National Tamale Day

Tamales are believed to have originated in Mesoamerica between 8000 and 5000 B.C. The tamale is believed to have been developed as a food that could be easily packed and transported for journeys. In modern Latin America, tamales are both a popular everyday food and an important part of holiday and special occasion celebrations.

Richard Lambert, the owner of a Santa Barbara eatery called Tamales-to-Go, came up with the idea for this holiday in 2014. He selected March 23rd as the date because the only other food holiday on that day was Melba Toast and he thought the day was far enough away from the holiday tamale eating season to revive interest in eating the food year-round. The first National Tamale Day was celebrated on March 23, 2015.
